 he reads from and discusses her newest picture book that celebrates the li
 fe of her grandfather\, the acclaimed Japanese American architect Minoru Y
 amasaki. She will also lead a short interactive art activity connected to 
 the story. This event is appropriate for kids of all ages.\n\nABOUT THE BO
 OK:\nMinoru Yamasaki described the feeling he sought to create in his buil
 dings as serenity\, surprise\, and delight. Here Katie Yamasaki charts his
  life and work: his childhood in Seattle’s Japanese immigrant community\
 , paying his way through college working in Alaska’s notorious salmon ca
 nneries\, his success in architectural school\, and the transformative str
 uctures he imagined and built. A Japanese American man who faced brutal an
 ti-Asian racism in post-World War II America and an outsider to the archit
 ectural establishment\, he nonetheless left his mark on the world\, from t
 he American Midwest to New York City\, Asia\, and the Middle East. This st
 riking picture book renders one artist’s work through the eyes of anothe
 r\, and tells a story of a man whose vision\, hard work\, and humanity led
  him to the pinnacle of his field.\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nKatie Yamasaki wo
 rks primarily as a muralist and picture book creator. She has painted more
  than 80 murals around the world\, and her most recent book is Dad Bakes. 
 She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their daughter.
