It shares th e experiences of Japanese Americans (Nisei) who served in the U.S. Army du ring World War II\, fighting on the front lines in Italy and France\, serv ing as linguists in the South Pacific\, and working as cooks and medics.\n \nThe soldiers were from Hood River\, Oregon\, where their families were l andowners and fruit growers. Town leaders\, including veterans' groups\, a ttempted to prevent their return after the war and stripped their names fr om the local war memorial. All of the soldiers were American citizens\, bu t their parents were Japanese immigrants and had been imprisoned in camps as a consequence of Executive Order 9066. The racist homecoming reception that the Hood River Japanese American soldiers received was decried across the nation.\n\nLinda Tamura\, who grew up in Hood River and whose father was a veteran of the war\, conducted extensive oral histories with the vet erans\, their families\, and members of the community. She had access to h undreds of recently uncovered letters and documents from private files of a local veterans' group that led the campaign against the Japanese America n soldiers. This book also includes the little known story of local Nisei veterans who spent 40 years appealing their convictions for insubordinatio n.\n\nLinda Tamura is professor of education at Willamette University in S alem\, Oregon. She is the author of&nbsp\;The Hood River Issei: An Ora l History of Japanese Settlers in Oregon's Hood River Valley.\n\n Free with Museum admission.&nbsp\;Reservations recommended to rsvp@janm.or g or 213.625.0414 at least 48 hours prior.\n \nwww.janm.org\n\nPurchase the book from the Museum Store &gt\;&gt\; DTSTAMP:20240418T045900Z SUMMARY:BOOKS and CONVERSATIONS: "Nisei Soldiers Break Their Silence" by Li nda Tamura URL:/en/events/2012/11/11/books-and-conversations-nisei-soldiers-break-the/ END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
