  Although the wartime removal and confinement of Japanese Americans\, ofte
 n (if imprecisely) called the &quot\;internment\,&quot\; has been comprehe
 nsively studied by three generations of scholars\, it is only through a tr
 ansnational narrative\, set within an  enlarged timeframe\, that it can be
  properly understood. At the same time\, studying the wartime challenges t
 o the citizenship rights of  Japanese Americans on the mainland and in Haw
 aii gives us tools to better understand our current situation.\n\n<strong>
