Every summer, hundreds of samurai horsemen in full armor gallop across the plains in Japan to gather wild horses. Reenacting this event from over a thousand years ago, one can still see the traditional horsemen of Fukushima at the Soma-Nomaoi Festival every July.

Although greatly impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, the people of Tohoku, Northeast Japan, stood resilient in the face of disaster. This is one of the many cultural traditions that is a foundation upon which Japan is rebuilding. The Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta, the JETRO Atlanta Office, and the Japan American Society of Georgia will have a special exhibition introducing the Tohoku region and its reconstruction.

The exhibition will feature the culture, history, and traditions of Northeast Japan that survived the Earthquake. A Japanese armorer will be on hand to demonstrate the construction techniques of samurai armor. Exhibits will also feature traditional cabinet making, ironware teapots, and modern products from the region.

We would like to cordially invite you to learn more about Tohoku’s recovery from the March earthquake, and sample some of the finest sake in the world. This event is also a special opportunity to thank those who reached out to help Japan in her time of need.
