Japanese Language Courses
Winter II Term (8 Weeks: January 3 – February 24, 2011)

$225 Members & Continuing Students /$250 Non-Members (Includes Textbooks)

The Japan America Society of Chicago now offers 8 levels of Japanese courses. Each is tailored to the level of expertise and type of study required by students. Weekly lessons provide students with an opportunity to begin the study of Japanese or to sharpen previously acquired skills. All courses are taught by an experienced native instructor of the Japanese language.

Beginning Japanese Level I Time: Wednesday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Designed for students with no previous instruction in Japanese, this course strives to develop an understanding of basic elements of Japanese grammar, expressions, and writing system. Textbook: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. I.

Beginning Japanese Level II Time: Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m

A continuation of Beginning Japanese Level I, this course will build upon previously learned basic elements of Japanese grammar and expressions. Writing system will include a review of katakana, hiragana, and an introduction to basic Chinese characters (Kanji). Textbooks: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. I (from Lesson 6) and Basic Kanji Book, Vol. I.

Beginning Japanese Level III Time : Thursday evenings, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

A continuation of Beginning Japanese Level lI. This course will build upon previously learned basic elements of Japanese grammar and expressions. Students will learn how to make plans with friends or colleagues, as well as learn how to request an item, etc. Textbooks: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. I (from Lesson 12) and Basic Kanji Book, Vol. I.

Beginning Japanese Level Ⅳ Time : Tuesday evenings, 8:00-10:00 p.m.

A continuation of Beginning Japanese Level lII. After completion of this class, your level will be comparable to the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level 4.Textbooks: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. I (from Lesson 16) and Basic Kanji Book, Vol. I.

Intermediate Japanese Level I Time: Monday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Designed for students whose level is comparable to passing the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level 4, or have completed Japanese For Busy People, Vol. Ⅰ. Emphasis is on grammatical expressions, basic conversation, and development of Chinese characters (kanji), up to approximately 100 characters. Textbooks: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. II (from Lesson 5) and Basic Kanji Book, Vol. I.

Intermediate Japanese Level Il Time: Wednesday evenings, 8:00-10:00 p.m.

A continuation of Intermediate Japanese Level Ⅰ.Students will learn how to relate an event in chronological sequence, compare the way something is now to how it was in the past, and describe facilities and other surroundings. Textbooks: Japanese For Busy People, Vol. II (from Lesson 10) and Basic Kanji Book, Vol. I.

Conversational Japanese Time: Monday evenings, 5:30-7:30 p.m

Developed for students who have an understanding of Japanese grammar, and a minimum knowledge of 150 kanji. This class will provide a forum for basic Japanese conversation between students and instructor. Topics of conversation will be determined by the instructor, along with various reading assignments. This class will prepare students for Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level 3. Textbook: Japanese For Busy People, Ⅲ (from Lesson 9) and various handouts.

Advanced Japanese Time: Tuesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Objective of this class is 1.) to develop an ability to carry an extensive conversation with native Japanese speakers, 2.) be able to read Japanese newspapers and 3.) acquire a well balanced knowledge about Japanese culture and way of life. The first hour of class will be dedicated to grammar development, utilizing kanji. Students will use the textbook Japanese for Busy People Vol. III. The second hour of the class will focus on conversation only. After completion of this class, your level will be comparable to the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level 2. Textbook: Japanese For Busy People, Ⅲ (from L9) and various handouts.

*Pre-registration required before 12/23. Due to strict security measures, walk-in registration will not be accepted.
