The first Military Intelligence Service Language School was established in the months before the attack on Pearl Harbor to teach the Japanese language at the Presidio of San Francisco. Today, Japanese is only one of the 24 languages taught at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Languages Center at the Presidio of Monterey.

As the nature of warfare has changed since the 1940s, how has military language instruction changed? What has changed in the ways intelligence is gathered? Justin andAshley Girardi – specialists in Mandarin Chinese and Arabic, respectively, and graduates of the Defense Language Institute – will join a panel of former military linguists, some of whom are featured in the Winning the Peace exhibit. Together they will discuss these and other questions at a thought-provoking event at the Japanese American Service Committee.
Sunday, June 27, 2010, 4 p.m.

4427 N. Clark Street, Chicago

Free admission
Light refreshments will be served
