A Dream of Riches Exhibit
Images and impressions of 100 years of Japanese Canadian history

JCCC Gallery until March 14, 2008

The Japanese Canadians 1877-1977 was organized in 1976 by Michiko Sakata who implored the community to "photograph, history, exhibit". The material gathered became the foundation upon which the story of the Japanese Canadians could be told. That multitude of tiny reflections formed the larger mirror through which a more comprehensive picture of Japanese Canadian history was revealed to the community. Community identity and awareness was greatly enhanced and, in many ways, that year marked the birth of the contemporary Japanese Canadian community.

A Dream of Riches, created three decades after the original, allows us to rediscover that important moment of discovery, growth, and pride. The exhibition recaptures the feeling of the era: families and communities coming together, seeking roots, recovering and addressing the past in a spirit of reinvention.

A Dream of Riches is a traveling exhibit from the Japanese Canadian National Museum and presents the original exhibit photographs and textual quotations along with recollections, archival material and artifacts.

This exhibit is part of the Redress 20th Anniversary Celebrations in Toronto. Co-sponsored by the NAJC Toronto Chapter and the JCCC Heritage Committee.
