He was born in Oa kland\, California\, and incarcerated at the Topaz WRA Center during WWII. His Ph.D. is from the University of California\, San Diego\, and he is a Professor\, Department of American Ethnic Studies\, and Adjunct Professor\ , Department of Sociology\, University of Washington.
