Japanese (American) Can Dance!

このごろ、月曜日が来るのが待ち遠しくてたまらない。「Dancing with the Stars」(以下DWTS)の放送が楽しみなのだ。「DWTS」は、全米5大ネットワークの一つ、ABCの人気番組。12人の芸能人(スポーツ選手含む)が、プロの社交ダンサーとペアを組み、勝ち抜き戦を行うというもの。社交ダンスなんてハイスクールのプロム以来、という芸能人たちがプロの厳しい指導の下、懸命に踊る姿が視聴者の好感を呼んでいる。

『ヒロシマナガサキ』 - 日系人監督の映画が話題に

第二次世界大戦終結から62年を迎えた昨夏、日本では日系アメリカ人監督による2つのドキュメンタリー映画が話題になった。スティーヴン・オカザキ氏の『ヒロシマナガサキ』(原題 White Light / Black Rain)とリサ・モリモト氏の『TOKKO/特攻』だ。先の大戦をテーマにした映画はこれまでにもあったが、この2作品は日本人にとって特別な意味を持っているように思われる。ひとつには、日本人にとっての日系人に対する親近感。そして、日系人監督の日系人としての感覚とアメリカ人としての視点。それらが作品を見る私たち日本人に語りかけるものは何か―8月9日の長崎原爆の日に『ヒロシマナガサキ』を見て考えた。

よみがえったか? リトル東京の映画館

リトル東京のはずれ、メイン通りを車で走る際、いつも気になっていた看板があった。「LINDA LEA」「JAPANESE FILMS」古めかしい“東映”のマークも見えた。ここが、日本映画専門の映画館だったと初めて聞いたときは驚いたものだ。今、日本映画がLAで上映されるとすれば、日本でヒットした作品が米系の配給会社によって1週間のみ、独立系映画館で上映されることがあるくらい。しかも客席はガラガラのことも多い。それほど影の薄くなった日本映画を専門に上映する映画館があったなんて。そして、昔はこんなところにまでリトル東京が広がっていたんだな…。今では英語というよりスペイン語の文字が目立つその附近を漠然と眺めていたものだ。

Con él presente artículo se busca reflexionar acerca de la representación de lo nikkei en la televisión peruana. Así, parto de una pregunta básica: ¿cómo se retrata lo nikkei en el discurso mediático? Sin embargo, es necesario señalar que una respuesta a esta pregunta debe ser considerada como una primera aproximación al tema, pues desde la antropología los estudios sobre los medios audiovisuales (en especial la televisión) son escasos. Esta situación se dificulta más si la referimos al estudio de las minorías étnicas, en este caso, la japonesa.

My father came to Hawaii from Okinawa in 1907 as an indentured laborer for a sugar plantation company. My mother followed in 1910 as a picture bride and then also became a laborer. When their children began going to school, they both learned to read and write Japanese and English.

They dreamed of one day returning home wealthy, but that day never came. The elusive pot of gold under the rainbow, neither kind nor cruel, was indifferent to them.

El retumbar del taiko (tambor japonés) impresiona. El ritmo contagiante, la intensidad del sonido y la emotividad de quien toca este instrumento, transmiten mucho de la cultura e idiosincrasia del Japón. En el Perú, son cada vez más sus seguidores.

Un pueblo sin tradición es un pueblo sin provenir, dijo alguna vez el periodista colombiano Alberto Lleras. La tradición no sólo mantiene sino también genera. No solo preserva, sino también innova.

It’s often noted that James Shigeta is the only Asian American actor to be groomed as a romantic lead in Hollywood’s studio system. At a time when interracial relationships were rare, Shigeta romanced leading ladies, who also happened to be Caucasian, in the groundbreaking films “The Crimson Kimono” (1959) and “Bridge to the Sun” (1961).

His most celebrated role later came in the splashy 1961 movie musical “Flower Drum Song,” where he performed opposite Nancy Kwan in a film that paved the way for the next generation of Asian Americans in media.

I first heard about Gordon Hirabayashi over ten years ago, through a video I saw on PBS titled A Personal Matter. I was very intrigued by the story, and started to do more research on Gordon through resources such as Peter Irons' books The Courage of Their Convictions and Justice at War. The more I heard, the more fascinated I became. I wondered why, as a Sansei, I had never heard Gordon's story before. After all, as a child, hadn't I learned about Rosa Parks' courageous refusal to go the back of a segregated bus during the 1960s? Gordon had taken a similar stand against racism two decades earlier in the 1940s—and he was only 24 when he did so! Why didn't the history books mention him as well?

"To make a living in any of the arts is difficult — whether it be acting, writing, painting, music, or, in my case, cartooning," says Stan Sakai, creator of the wildly popular Usagi Yojimbo comic book series. "Parents, of course, want the best for their children, and a traditional job is the safest way to earn a living. However, I really wanted to get into writing and drawing, and my parents supported my decision, but with reservations."
