Last night, I attended the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game versus the San Francisco Giants. I'm definitely a Dodgers fan, so I was very disappointed that the Giants won the game. However, I was very interested to find that out of the Giants' nine players to start the game, two were part Japanese -- Dave Roberts and Travis Ishikawa. Then later in the game, Keiichi Yabu who is a Japanese national, came in briefly as a reliever. Ishikawa made a really nice catch of a foul ball partway through the game. I was impressed by his effort.
Roberts has been around in the major leagues for years and is half Black/half Japanese. He was born in Okinawa where his father was stationed. Travis Takashi Ishikawa will turn 25 next week and is from Seattle, Washington. His mother is Caucasian and his father Japanese American.
Hiroki Kuroda will start tonight's game for the Dodgers against the Giants. I remember when there were no Asians in baseball. It's truly amazing and wonderful how many there are excelling in the sport now.
