Nicole Sumida, founder and publisher of riksha, a magazine dedicated to promoting artistic and literary works by and about Asian Americans, writes about growing up in 1970s Chicago as one of the few Eurasians in her community in a recent article for the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society. In her article, “On Being Japanese American…”, Ms. Sumida describes the evolving understanding of her Asian-American identity and the process that led to her founding the literary publication, riksha.
