I recently moved to Bainbridge Island from Dallas (only lived there for one year, and that was enough!). My wife, Yumiko, will be joining me shortly (hurray!). I really love this area, and think it's going to be the place we let our roots grow deep. hopefully we can attend some JA community events in the near future. We are friendly couple in out mid thirties, like to joke, enjoy making fools of ourselves while swing dancing (it's best to close your eyes, really), and we are expecting our first child around the end of march.

I have a few questions for anyone that might have answers:

1. Are there any Japanese celebrations/holidays that are observed on Bainbridge Is. or surrounding areas?
2. karaoke on bainbridge or close by? (I already had a great time at ....oh....Bush restaurant was it? too much Sapporo, sorry.
3. best place to buy a decent futon
4. information, observations, advice, or experiences of Japanese who have moved to bainbridge would be fantastic

thanks!

Hello! Thank you for joining the Discover Nikkei web site! My name is Victoria Kraus and I'm the web editor for Discover Nikkei.

I did a Google search of Bainbridge Island and came across this link, http://bainbridgeisland.com/calendar/index.htm, the community events calendar for Bainbridge.

There is definitely a strong Japanese American community in Seattle, but I don't know how far or how long it would take you to get there from Bainbridge.

Here's another link to a bulletin board/discussion forum on our site for events in the Pacific Northwest, http://www.discovernikkei.org/forum/forum/70

Good luck and hope you find Discover Nikkei a useful resource!

I will defintaly look into those links you provided, that was very kind of you. luckily, downtown Seattle is only about 30 minute ferry ride (which I totally enjoy) from Bainbridge Is.

thanks again for the information!

Neal

My husband and I just visited Seattle in September. While there, we took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island for half a day. We went to the Bainbridge Island Historical Society. For such a small space, they actually have quite a bit of information about Japanese Americans in Bainbridge Island (the local JA community helped with the information), particularly before and during WWII. I definitely recommend that you check it out if you haven't already.
The other interesting thing that I saw while there was Japanese American influences in some of the local farms and some street names. Here's a link to some other Nikkei-related places I visited while in Seattle.
The JA community in Bainbridge Island is also working on a project to build a WWII memorial site. Here's the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community website: www.bijac.org.
