Nikkei, Japanese American (or Japanese Canadian, Japanese Brazilian, etc), or Asian American?

How do you self-identify yourself? Personally, I think of myself first as Japanese American. In the past, secondly it would have been Asian American, but recently, I admit largely because of this website, I think my secondary choice has become Nikkei.

I guess it also depends on the situation or context. But I guess the way I see it as being Asian American is thinking more as being an individual within a larger group within the United States, whereas identifying as Nikkei is being an individual within a larger group globally. Does that make sense?

It's like this:

identifying within the U.S.: me -> Japanese American -> Asian American

indentifying globally: me -> Japanese American -> Nikkei

I don't know if that actually clarified it or not. What do you think?
