Thanks for attending the program!

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed the program. I was so pleased to see so many people in attendance really engaged and participating. It was so wonderful that so many people shared their really thoughtful and enlightening stories. We'll be posting photos and some video clips from the program to this site, along with the hand-outs. There will also be some articles added in response to the program. If you're interested in contributing an article(s), let us know!

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of the dialogue which we can continue both online and with more programs like this. In fact, after the program ended, Lisa Sasaki and I were talking with Curtiss Rooks about what the next one will be, so stay tuned!

Thanks for posting. It's always nice to hear that all the work that goes into a program was well worth it!
interview with a chick sexer

There are interview clips on Discover Nikkei with George Yamada, who, after WWII, worked as a chick sexer in upstate New York and the surrounding region for thirty years. There are several clips in which he talks about it here: George Yamada Real People video clips.

sakoda family

I've heard about rhis story and had heard a little about Jimmy Sakoda, but it was really interesting learning about him as a person. Actually, the most surprising discovery was when I recognized who his wife is. A year ago I wouldn't have, but at the end of last year we interviewed her for the Museum Store Online. It was a really interesting story. She shared some memories of growing
up in Little Tokyo. The article is also on Discover Nikkei: "Stories from Little Tokyo: The Woman in the Picture"

great story!

Thanks for sharing that article! I had never heard of him. It's great how they're honoring him and how much he has been appreciated. It's pretty incredible that the only person to be guaranteed a job for life that the Wrigleys included in the deal was him.

I recently watched the Dodgers' 50th anniversary in Los Angeles game on TV and it's had me reminiscing about baseball lately. I never knew that a JA was the clubhouse manager for the team!

Thanks for sharing this story. That couple just sounds so amazing! Was really interesting to read about them.

The book they mention in the article is available through the Japanese American National Museum Store:

surreal

It was kind of surreal watching the video clips. There's such a disconnect between the music and the style of the video. I've never seen hip-hop style blended with pure enka music.

real vs artificial

My husband and I usually purchase a real tree when we have one, but growing up, our family had an artifical tree. Now, when I look at it, it seems small, but when I was little, it seemed really big and full of love as we decorated it with our assortment of ornaments, some store-bought, some home-made, some given to us as gifts. It was always such a special part of celebrating Christmas to decorate the tree.

pretty amazing story and

pretty amazing story and christmas tree, that can survive so long. We used to get real trees all the time until we got tired of the mess they made, we purchased an artificial tree. But after reading this story next year I think we'll go with a real one. I can't imagine what this family would think about all the trees though that get cut down then thrown out at the end of the season.

100th Year Anniversary in Argentina

Hi JANM!
I am a New York nissei living in Buenos Aires now.
Argentina is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Okinawan immigration this year and there are a lot of festivities planned.
Are there any plans for Nikkeis in US to be part of this? The organization that is heading the celebrations, COA, is seeking spanish/english bilinguals to help with the festivities so I was just wondering. http://www.okiren.org.ar/
Please feel free to contact me if anyone is interested in coming here!
