Thanks for sharing your family's matsutake story! I really look forward to matsutake season each year. Sometimes, if we're lucky, relatives from Seattle will send my mother a box to share with her siblings down here in L.A. After would open the box and remove the fragrant mushrooms, I would inhale the wonderful scent that lingered on the damp newspaper that lined the box. And then, that night my mother would make matsutake gohan and matsutake soup. Such a treat!

I can't wait for the season to come around again! I never remember when it is, but I'm reminded when I go to Japanese markets and start seeing them there.

Finding and Preparing The Elusive Matsutake Mushroom

By Thomas Tsutsumoto

A rare, sunny, mildly humid Northwest Labor Day weekend in 2004 arrived shortly after four consecutive days of rain. This was the signal for my father to embark on one of his favorite pastimes—finding the awesome, tasty matsutake mushroom, a small treasure of the Pacific Northwest that is increasingly difficult to find these days.
