 <description>&lt;p&gt;Kan Tagami of Hawaii served for nearly five years as personal interpreter-aide to General Douglas MacArthur. In this capacity, he was both witness and participant to the rebuilding of Japan after World War II. In his essay, he writes of his most memorable experience in which he had an unprecedented private conversation with the Emperor of Japan. He wrote, &quot;I, an American Nisei, only one generation removed from Japan, was having a conversation with a man who, until recently, was considered a divinity.&quot; The Emperor expressed to him his appreciation for the work of the Nisei in Japan. &quot;&#039;You are a bridge between our two nations,&#039; he said.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
