My Journey to Discover the Legacy of my Grandma, Yuri Kochiyama

Enlarge Enlarge Licensing

"My Bill" <3

She met strapping, handsome, young Bill Kochiyama when he visited Camp Jerome.  Grandpa Bill fought in the 442nd Regimental Combat team, the most highly decorated unit in United States history.   Her long distance, passionate romance is what I like to call her silver lining during World War II.  He was her partner to the end, who stuck with her through thick and thin. He supported her political and social endeavors although he did not always agree with them and loved her dearly.  Grandpa Bill also played a role in the Redress and Reparations Movement, researching and testifying during the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC), which led to the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.

Unfortunately, Grandpa Bill passed away when I was only 2 years old right after the birth of my little sister.  I wish I had been able to spend more time with him.
