 ed the constitutionality of the internment of Japanese Americans during Wo
 rld War II. His case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, which ru
 led against him and accepted the government&rsquo\;s argument of military 
 necessity. In the 1980s\, his case was reopened on the basis of new eviden
 ce and a U.S. District Court judge vacated his conviction and found that t
 he government had given the court false information.\n\n</blockquote>\n<bl
 ockquote>\n\nKorematsu\, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in
  1998\, traveled across the country to speak about his case and stress the
  importance of constitutional protections for all Americans. Five years af
 ter his death in 2005\, the State of California established Jan. 30\, his 
 birthday\, as Fred Korematsu Day.\n\n</blockquote>
