The Nishio brothers were born and raised in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver\, British Columbia. Their father\, Ippei ( Gifu-ken) was a successful textile wholesaler before World War Two. The fa mily was forced to move to the &quot\;self supporting&quot\; town of Bridg e River\, B.C. during the infamous internment years. In 1941-42 Tom was a University of British Columbia student and star rugby player until his fam ily joined the mass expulsion of 21\,000 other innocent Japanese Canadians who were labeled &quot\;enemy aliens&quot\;. After WW2\, Kaz and his fath er (and later Tom) became the exclusive Canadian distributors for Mikasa t ableware.
