Join us for an afternoon with author Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and a film screening of “Farewell to Manzanar,” on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gardena JCI Hall.

Mrs. Houston, the youngest of ten children, was born in Inglewood, CA, and spent her childhood in Southern California until 1942, when she and her family were uprooted from their home and interned at Manzanar. The film, based on Mrs. Houston’s compelling memoir about the Japanese-American Internment experience, as seen through the eyes of a young girl, is a haunting reminder of how our civil rights are at risk in moments of crisis. The film, originally made for television and rarely seen in 36 years will be presented by the Japanese American National Museum.

This California Reads Searching for Democracy program is made possible with support from Cal Humanities in partnership with California Center for the Book.

This special program is made available by the County of Los Angeles Libraries.
