In this spiri t\, 120\,000 Japanese Americans -- including men\, women\, children\, the elderly\, and the infirm -- survived the internment camps of World War II. Despite these hardships\, they whittled and carved\, painted and etched\, stitched and crocheted—fashioning furniture from scrap lumber\, carving teapots from slate\, and making pendants from toothbrush handles -- to ad d beauty to the bleak surroundings and purpose to their daily life. What t hey created is a celebration of the nobility of the human spirit in advers ity. This exhibition shows the amazing range of their creativity.\n\nBased on the book The Art of Gaman\, by Delphine Hirasuna\, the exhibi tion originated and was first shown at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco.\n\nOregon Historical Society\n1200 SW Park Avenue\nPortlan d\, OR 97205\n(503) 222-1741\nwww.ohs.org \norhist@ohs.org DTSTAMP:20240419T122013Z SUMMARY:Exhibition at the Oregon Historical Society -- The Art of Gaman -- October 19\, 2007 - January 4\, 2008 URL:/en/events/2007/10/19/exhibition-at-the-oregon-historical-society----th e/ END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
