Mission Statement

The Chicago Japanese American Historical Society is a grassroots organization founded in the early 1990s. Our mission is to preserve, promote and present the history of Japanese Americans in the Chicagoland area. We have been documenting our history and legacy in Chicago, educating the general public about the Japanese American and Japanese experience and culture, and developing teaching materials and museum exhibits which feature aspects of Japanese American History.

About

By our participation we hope to promote and foster awareness of the uniqueness of JAs in Chicagoland area and demonstrate the many commonalities among Japanese communities throughout the world.

Current our participations on the sites are:

    - Quarterly articles from our Voices of Chicago publication under Community Forum Article section.
    - A New Beginning: Japanese American Community in Chicago 1944 to the Present: An interactive photographic timeline.
    - Multimedia Gallery: Japanese American Team Spirit: The Chicago Nisei Athletic Association, an exhibition of photos and artifacts from the Chicago Nisei Athletic Association (CNAA)
    - Demographic data on Japanese Americans in the Chicago area

In 1995, when CJAHS brought the traveling exhibit Strength and Diversity: Japanese American Women 1885-1990 to Chicago, we developed an accompanying set of practical lesson plans for grades 3-10. The Chicago logo illustrating the book's cover depicts a Japanese American woman silhouetted against the city skyline.

Designed and stitched by Japanese American women from our community, the Chicago is Home Quilt tells the story of how Japanese Americans made Chicago their home after WW II.

This brief history of the Chicago Nisei Athletic Association (CNAA) supplements our traveling exhibit, Japanese American Team Spirit: Chicago Nisei Athletic Association. Through photos, objects, and text, we explore how sports contributed to community formation and reflected intergenerational relationships from the mid-1940s to the early 1990s.
