Hina-ningyo from Childhood

Submitted by: Jane Shohara Matsumoto (Los Angeles, California, USA)

This doll set was purchased by my mother when I was a young child in Tokyo Japan. I was born in Tokyo while my dad was stationed there with the US Army, and later for the American government. My father knew he was returning home to the US. My mother wanted to buy a set that could be easily transported overseas.

These dolls have a cherubic, cheerful face in contrast to other sets that are more serious and courtly. I was always happy that my mother chose dolls with faces that looked a bit juvenile, but had a happy, youthful countenance.
