What's in a Name

Kyle Ishii

When I asked my mother how she and my father settled on naming me Kyle, the answer I received was one that I consider a lesser of many evils. At the time of my birth, Brandon and Matthew were among the popular names within my parents circle of family and friends. My mother wanted to select a name that was more unique than what everyone else was naming their children. Settling on Kyle, my parents didn’t choose an Irish name for its literal meaning, of which I am clueless, nor did they choose it out of respect for another individual.

The ironic thing is that I have met numerous Kyle’s in my lifetime. My grad school class had three Kyle’s, almost as many as there was of Matthew’s and Brandon’s. Additionally, I work on a team of 10 that happens to have another Kyle. We also found that two other family members are named Kyle. It looks like my parents ended up settling on a more popular name than they intended.
