Haruko Tsutsui

"Mrs. Tsutsui, who speaks mostly in Japanese, has been photographed many times in front of Waikane Store, which her family has run on the Windward side of O‘ahu since 1929. I looked for an interesting location on the property to photograph her in, and was attracted to a corrugated iron wall in back of the garage. When she smiled, I thought she looked childlike. It’s only when you look at her hands that you can tell she has been through a lot over the years."
