ハワイへの移民

日本人の海外移住は、1868年（明治元年）「元年者」と呼ばれるハワイへの移民に始まりました。ハワイへの日本人移民の多くは、「契約移民」で、サトウキビの農園で働きました。

写真は、プランテーションで働く日本人女性です。彼らの服装に注目してください。これは、日本の着物をハワイのプランテーションで使いやすいようにと、アレンジしたものです。
