Tomoe Moriya


Professor at Hannan University. Specializes in the history of Japanese religious thought and Asian American religious studies. He is researching the globalization of Japanese Buddhism from a cross-border perspective that connects modern Japanese history with Asian American history. His major works include The Birth of American Buddhism: Cultural Transformation of Japanese Religion in the Early 20th Century (Gendai Shiryo Publishing, 2001); "Japanese Buddhism and Ethnicity in the United States: Focusing on the Buddhist Community in America (BCA)" Modern Buddhism 9 (2002); Buddhism at the Crossroads of the Pacific: Imamura Yemyō and Buddhist Social Ethics, in Hawaii at the Crossroads of the US and Japan before the Pacific War (ed. JT Davidann, University of Hawaii Press, 2008); Issei Buddhism in the Americas (co-edited with Duncan Ryūken Williams, University of Illinois Press, forthcoming).
