Jeremy Isao Speier curates films entirely from online open source on YouTube. These films are made by early Japanese filmmakers that pioneered an experimental approach that was often avant-gardist in stance. Featured directors include Toshio Matsumoto known for his Warholian 60s happening, counter cinema and experimental film work who heavily influenced Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Other experimental and conceptual works featured in the film set are by Teinosuke Kinugasa, Yasuzo Masumura, Shuji Terayama, Iimura Takahiko (w/John Cage), Toshiro Mifune, and John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven after Seven Samurai by Kurosawa). Counter Cinema acts as a counterpoint to Hollywood and genre films following its own history and trajectory of counter-tradition and experimental practices of filmmaking.
